Senior Consultant: Southern Waters is an independent company associated with the Institute of Water Studies, University of the Western Cape (UWC).  The company aims to provide a service to public and private organisations in advising on the sustainable management of inland and coastal aquatic systems, in particular environmental flows.  At the same time, its members contribute to the body of fundamental knowledge on the structure and functioning of these ecosystems, and Southern Waters has therefore retained a research and teaching component through its direct links with an academic institution.

Aquatic ecologist: Employed for two years on a wilderness estate along the Witte River, Baainskloof, Western Cape, South Africa.  Responsible for all facets of the river restoration project that included managing and co-ordinating tree felling teams, management of farm staff, data collection, technical decisions, establishment of indigenous nursery and propagating flora for re-establishment, acting as general ecological counsel to company directors, providing project management assistance to other company employees.

2003-2006:    Freshwater Research Unit, University of Cape Town
Grant Holder and Researcher: Water Research Commission Research Grant. The nature and invasion of riparian vegetation zones in rivers of the Western Cape, South Africa.  A four-year project investigating the effect of woody alien trees on undisturbed, riparian vegetation communities of mountain streams and foothills in the south-western Cape.  Responsible for all facets of the project, including field data collection, technical decisions, report writing, liaison with the client, liaison with the Working for Water project office, presentation of seminars and preparation of invoices.

Riparian botanist and Environmental Flow specialist:      Generating a thorough understanding of the functional ecology of the Elephant Marshes incorporating hydromorphology, ecosystem services, biodiversity, and livelihoods; and model past, present, and future possible management strategies. The assignment will also assess the feasibility for designating the marshes as a community-managed protected area and as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar convention using information from the surveys to assess whether the Elephant Marshes meet the Ramsar Criteria.

2014 – 2015: Batoka Hydropower Project

2014 – 2016: Reserve determinations for the Usutu-Mthlatuze catchments, including rivers, lakes, estuaries

Environmental Flow specialist:  Providing specialist input toward the assessment of environmental flows for nine river sites, Lake Sibaya, Kosi and the Pongola Floodplain, plus extrapolation of the results obtained to the rest of the catchments, to allow for gazetting of the Ecological Reserve for the whole Water Management Area.

2014 – 2017: Lotic landscapes and the Reserve

Project leader:  To use a variety of data sources to compile a framework of change at temporal and spatial scales of relevance to river ecosystems, and to correlate these with known, and measured, changes in river ecosystem condition with the aim of identifying the long-term: (1) natural cycles; (2) non-flow related impacts and (3) flow related impacts on components of the rivers.  The outputs will provide a framework to contextualise data generated by Environmental Flow monitoring programmes, and aid in analysis of data and analystical results.

Project Leader:  Quantifying the links between patterns of riparian vegetation and flow on South African rivers.  Current knowledge, existing data from Reserve studies, and empirical evidence was synthesized to propose a naming convention, methods of identification and a description of the characteristics of lateral zonation patterns in riparian vegetation communities.  

2010 – 2011: Mandaya Hydropower Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA)

Riparian botanist:  Appointed to provide specialist input into the Environmental Flow (EF) determinations using DRIFT for two sites on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia, however, the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) was cancelled after the Client decided not to pursue the Mandaya Dam. Project Cancelled after Millenium Dam announced by Ethiopian Government.
